On Friday, the Daily Illini printed its list of celebrated faculty based on ICES forms from the previous semester. Interestingly in the category of Education was none other than Gene Amberg. Amberg, at best failed to report and ignored calls for an investigation, at worst an accessory to statutory rape, will be familiar to anyone who has followed the disgraceful Jon Andrew White case that occurred at the Thomas Paine Elementary School in Urbana, where Amberg was Superintendent during the time of the sex scandal. A useful breakdown of the child molestation case can be found at TeacherTrash here.
In an act of impudence and ludicrous oversight, (which we have all now come to expect as a hallmark of the University of Illinois administration) and despite being found guilty for failing to make mandatory reports on suspect child molestation by teachers, Amberg nevertheless still holds a clinical faculty position at the UI. We wonder if this is something that White and his administration are aware of, or does this by now coincide with the type of educational practices and belief that they hold to?
